When I was 14, Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" was an inescapable mega-hit. In Covid times 30 years later, "hold on for one more day" floated up from dusty memory banks and throbbed: a dull mantra for shapeless weeks of anxiety and grief.
When I started this recording on the last day of 2020, my intention was to make something soothing. I'm not sure that I hit that mark! I related all too well to the song's seemingly manic jags from dogged optimism ("things will go your way") to refreshingly tough self-talk ("you got yourself into your own mess"). I found no suggestion of a community or collective in its implied narrative, only messy visions of a self battling itself. I leaned into those visions and took liberties.

Please enjoy and please hold on.

lyrics

I know there's pain
I know there's pain
Why do you lock yourself up?
Why do you lock yourself up?

No one can change your life
No one except for you
Don't ever let anyone
Don't let anyone step all over you

Open your heart
Open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair
Is it really fair to feel
this way inside?

Someday somebody's gonna make you wanna turn around and say goodbye
Until then
will you let them hold you down and make you cry?
Don't you know?
Don't you know?
Things can change?
Things can go your way?
If you hold on
for one more day
things will go your way

You can sustain
You can sustain
Or are you comfortable?
Are you comfortable with the pain?

You've got no one to blame
No one to blame for your unhappiness
You got yourself
You got yourself into your own mess

Letting
Letting
Letting your worries pass you by
Don't you think
Don't you think
Don't you think it's time?
Don't you think it's time to change?
It's time to change your mind?

Someday somebody's gonna make you wanna turn around and say goodbye
Until then
will you let them hold you down and make you cry?
Don't you know don't you know things can change things can change things can go your way things can go your way things can go things can go?

Can you hold on?
Can you hold on?
(I know that there is pain but you hold on for one more day)
Can you hold on?
